Essay # 3 - Larkin (Texts in Time)

Past Paper question: January '07

How far do you agree with the view that "growing old is the main theme of Philip Larkin's High Windows"?

In your essay you should refer to either two or three poems in detail, or range more widely over the whole collection.

Date due: Monday 10/3/08 Please refer to handout in class (Tuesday) for marking criteria.

[I would strongly urge you to focus on 2 - 3 poems in detail as this will allow you to demonstrate your detailed knowledge of the poems. Perhaps you could briefly mention 1 or 2 other poems).

This may be a stupid question, but, could Livings 1,2 and 3 be classed as three separate poems?

dont think so craig, treat it as one as it is under one title.

i think that you should be able to class them as seperate poems as they are about different themes but if you wanted you could class them as one poem but it would be easier if you didn't.

Treat Livings as just one poem, however if you are analysing it in an essay you could choose to look at just one part, or you could look at it as a whole (and that would mean analysing just one other poem, not 2).
